Andres Felipe Diaz, M.S. – WAVi qEEG Technician

Education:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Biological Science from City University of New York Queens College

  • Master of Science in Neuroscience from St. John’s University

Specialties:

  • WAVi qEEG Technician

  • Neuroscience

  • Tai Chi and Qi Gong

As a certified WAVi qEEG technician, Andres Diaz provides patients with objective measurements of brain health, offering insights into cognitive function, treatment effectiveness, and long-term neurological trends. This data-driven approach supports the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of conditions such as memory loss, neurodegenerative diseases, concussions, and traumatic brain injuries.

Andres’ passion for neuroscience was sparked by his personal experiences with tai chi, qi gong, and kung fu—and his curiosity about how these practices impact the brain. This unique integration of Eastern philosophy and Western science makes him a natural fit for the Shiu Clinic team.

He holds a Master of Science in Neuroscience from St. John’s University, where he graduated in the top 5% of his class. While there, he collaborated with renowned researcher Dr. Yan Helen Yu on NIH R16-funded research exploring neural plasticity in auditory and cognitive processing. Their work focused on how both neurotypical and neurologically impaired individuals process language and music across tonal and non-tonal language backgrounds. His thesis, “Neurophysiological Indices of Lexical Tone Processing in Children with Different Language Backgrounds,” introduced novel findings suggesting that bilingual experience can enhance linguistic—rather than purely acoustic—processing of lexical tones.

Andres has shared his research at prestigious conferences including the International Organization of Psychophysiology (Geneva), the Acoustical Society of America (Chicago), the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (Toronto), and the Biennial SuRE Program Conference (Bethesda), with several abstracts published.

In addition to his research, Andres has taught general biology, microbiology, and anatomy & physiology as an adjunct instructor at St. John’s University. He currently serves as a laboratory coordinator and adjunct lecturer in the Biological Sciences Department at Wagner College.

Outside academia, Andres works with a diagnostic technology company, where he serves as a technician and trainer for the WAVi EEG Performance Device and other neurodiagnostic tools. This role has taken him to clinics across the tri-state area to train physicians and practitioners. It was through this work that he met Dr. Shiu and became an integral part of the Shiu Clinic team, supporting patient care and clinical innovation.

Andres’ long-term goal is to deepen our understanding of consciousness, neurological disorders, and healing through neuroplasticity and mind-body integration.
